updated 4 May 2022
The reports provide deep insights into the UK biotech sector with international comparisons. The compellingly presented data is accompanied by sector leaders’ commentary. Three short reports are published throughout the year to chart the main developments, and the larger report is published in January to conclude the year. To engage BIA members and all other key stakeholders, the reports should be positive, authoritative and trustworthy. Therefore the look needs to be simple, clean, and modern. The design has to reflect that the life sciences sector is a growing and innovative industry of the future that can truly make a difference to people's lives.
Task: (1) Design templates for the large annual report and the small quarterly reports (2) develop social media assets, including a one-minute animation based on the content and (3) create print-ready artwork, a downloadable/email-able PDF and an HTML version of the reports.
Requirements: Digital-first design of four reports per year, featuring one large report (24-32 pages) and three small reports (currently tri-fold). The design will also need to include social media content and animation. Complex data and text must be presented in engaging and clear ways for an expert audience, following BIA brand guidelines. Reports will be hosted online in HTML format, as PDFs and printed.
Templating (design sign-off) will need to be completed by mid-June for the Q2 report as the first example of the new design. [New timing TBC]
Proposal: Three options range from £18,000 at the high end with a microsite to allow a truly digital-first if not mobile-first delivery enabling animated graphs and interactive charts. At the low end at £9,000 is a crisp new look, and the digital production would simply mean populating the CMS of the BIA website with the new content and assets in the refreshed design.
All prices exclude VAT.

The design process has five steps: conducting research → developing concepts → designing templates → creating assets → delivering artwork. These steps are grouped into three phases: 01 design concepts, 02 design refinements and 03 file preparation & production.
The preferred approach is to replace presentations with conversations. So, close collaboration in frequent short exchanges rather than one or two presentations with ‘big’ reveals.
Initial thoughts
The current look, which the BIA brand guideline might set, is very approachable and friendly with the boldly outlined icons, flat colours and illustrated portraits of the thought leaders. The development of the new look should add a confident, forward-thinking feel and try to avoid the generic imagery that plagues the life science sector. One of the core challenges is creating an iconography that is meaningful, has style, and enhances the valuable insights presented by the BIA reports.
Further thoughts after our meeting
Template design and implementation phases
Phase 01: Design Concepts
- Clarify the needs of stakeholders and preferences of the BIA team beyond the information in the brief in a kick-off call or meeting
- Develop three design concepts for core design elements: typography, information graphics, chart styles and imagery within BIA brand guidelines
- Create stylescapes for each concept. These panoramic poster-like printouts give a flavour of the overall look and feel.
- Discuss the three concepts and alternative sizes and finishes for the printed reports in person to establish the preferred direction
- Devise a page plan for the tri-fold and annual reports based on the given information
- Develop two design routes based on the selected concept
- Propose two design directions for the covers and two spreads to establish design direction
Phase 02: Design Refinements
- Design the page layouts of the Q2 report based on the agreed design direction and refined page plans
- Tweak the layouts of the Q2 report, i.e. one round of revision of design and content (NB: client needs to proof-read!)
- Finalise the templates of the selected route and the Q2 report layout for sign-off
- Create the first round of assets of the Q2 report for social media channels as specified in the brief
- Storyboard a selection of frames of the animation to show how style translates into the moving image
Phase 03: File Preparation & Production
This phase offers three options. All will deliver the considered and well-crafted reports based on the refreshed look and feel developed in the previous two phases. The difference is the level of interactivity of the digital implementation:
Option 1 — Advanced
This option uses a microsite to allow a genuinely digital-first, if not mobile-first delivery enabling animated graphs and interactive charts as well as making the sharing, quoting and reusing of the findings and data presented in the report easy.
- Propose design based on agreed template look from phase 01
- Create animated graphs and interactive charts in the approved style
- Build a microsite using the content of the
Q2[TBC] report - Update/rebuilt microsite with the content of the subsequent reports
Option 2 — Comprehensive
This option delivers an engaging experience with animated and sharable infographics within the capabilities of the current BIA website.
- Create animated graphs and charts in the agreed style
- Write the scripts for three additional one-minute clips based on the key topic/insight of each report
- Populate the CMS of the BIA site with report content
Option 3 — Essential
This option simply uploads the new content and static assets in the refreshed design to the BIA website.
- Populate the CMS of the BIA site with content and infographics of the reports
In addition to the selected option above:
- Generate the prepress artwork and downloadable PDF of the
Q2[TBC] report - Write the script for the one minute clip based on the agreed storyboard
- Produce the animation(s) based on storyboard and signed-off script
- Designing the page layouts of the
Q3, the annual and the Q1[TBC] report when the content is available - Tweaking the layouts of remaining reports, i.e. two rounds of revisions of content (NB: client needs to proof-read!)
- Create the next rounds of assets
Q3, the annual and the Q1[TBC] report for social media channels as specified in the brief when the content is available
Concepts, design and production budgets
Option 1 Advanced £ 18000
Option 2 Comprehensive £ 14500
Option 3 Essential £ 9000
Beyond the first year
With the look and feel established in the first year, phase 01 concept and 02 design would be rolled into one to keep refining and refreshing the online and printed reports and shareable assets. Moreover, there is still a considerable effort in phase 03 file preparation & production.
Option 1 & 2 Recurring investment £ 12000
The estimated prices for each phase include all research, strategic and creative work as well as project management. Third-party costs such as copywriting, illustration, image licences, photography or printing, as well as travel outside London, are extra and agreed upon beforehand. Full terms and conditions
Initial timing for design and production
[New timing TBC]
Refresh the look and feel of BIA’s quarterly and annual reports can be delivered within the desired timeframe, depending on the decision process within the organisation. Given a swift agreement, the phases for the essential option to the advanced solution could be as follows:
Phase 01: Design Concepts second week of April to the third week of May [approx. 6 weeks]
Phase 02: Design Refinements third week of May to the second week of June [approx. 5w weeks]
Phase 03: File Preparation & Production as per the table in the briefing
Print production and management
The printing cost and timing depend on the print run and the finish, e.g. paper type and the delivery preference. Once we have the final design, we quote the exact specs before printing. All prices quoted are excluding VAT and delivery where applicable.
Successful collaboration
For successful execution of the project, open and trusting cooperation is crucial and required. That also means that all shared information and developed results are treated confidentially. Due to our close and regular collaboration, it is only necessary to document the essentials and not to create any further reporting. Any postponements or additional work will only take place after consultation.

“Stephan Hammes is all about clarity. To that, he adds a superb depth of perception. The two years we’ve worked together have been both a pleasure and an education. His thoughtful deconstruction of our ideas led us to an atomistic understanding of our offer, from which he built our brand. Through that, he shaped the company, represented by the striking and beautiful design he is known for. Always calm, always on the money, always on the company’s side by thinking on the customer’s side. You may think you know your company now, but the design confidence and message precision you’ll get from Stephan’s work is of a significantly higher order.” — Bill Brannigan, Entrepreneur
